HIKE INTO HISTORY: BACKPACK THE OLD SETTLER'S TRAIL
Backpack through more of the past 100 years of park history than offered on any other trail. This time of year you can really see early settlement home sites with their distinctive chimneys and chains of rock walls, defining this area as one of the most reminiscent of what the Smokies was like prior to park establishment. This moderate two-day hike covers 17 miles, making for two long days with several watery crossings but the elevation gain is minimal. Your hiking leaders will share many tips on backpacking and safety. Participants tent camp at a backcountry site giving them a chance to test gear in a deep woods setting. Prior backpacking experience is not essential. Participants provide their own gear and meals. Space is very limited, so early registration is a must. No bugs, fewer people, bring a warm sleeping bag and don’t miss it!

BACKPACKING THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL IN THE SMOKIES: NEWFOUND GAP TO FONTANA DAM
Backpack the Appalachian Trail for 40 miles along some of the most rugged landscape of the Southern Appalachians in the care of leaders who completed section hiking the entire 2,175 miles in 2005. After meeting at Fontana Dam, we’ll shuttle to Newfound Gap and spend six days hiking the western half of the Park, staying in shelters along the crest of the mountains. Participants mostly will hike above 5,000-ft, passing over Clingman’s Dome, Thunderhead and Rocky Top before descending through Spence Field. With good weather, a 360-degree view from Shuckstack fire tower before dropping to Fontana will finalize the experience. Aside from hiking through some of the most astounding scenery the Park has to offer, much will be shared about its history and you’ll learn from your leader-naturalists about its flora and fauna. This is a strenuous hike because each participant carries gear and supplies over rough terrain. All food, group equipment, shuttle and planning details are included. Register early, as space is very limited.

CATALOOCHEE GHOST TOWN HIKE IN THE SMOKIES
Spend a fall Saturday on a gentle walk through the former Little Cataloochee settlement region where little has changed since the late 1800s. This is an easy to moderate 5.4-mile round trip hike along the old community roadway where your guides will share their knowledge of pioneer history and the natural features that were cherished by early settlers. The journey passes by historic structures including the 1864 John Hannah cabin with its chimney of handmade brick and 29-inch puncheon floorboards. There ghost of son “Uncle Jim” still shouts out “Republican chatter” to passersby as they stroll along. We’ll see the 1889 Little Cataloochee Church and peruse the nearby cemetery tombstones of many a child and youth. As we travel, we’ll be on lookout for occasional hog wallows, bear and coyote scat and colorful fall plantlife to add to the discovery. Weather and time permitting, we’ll turn around to complete our trip at the re-constructed Dan Cook cabin with walls still standing from the old apple house.

FAIRBANKS. TRIP 2: FRIDAY, JULY 25 - SATURDAY, AUGUST 2, 2008.
TRIP BEGINS IN FAIRBANKS AND TERMINATES IN ANCHORAGE.
Alaska 2008 can best be described as a small
group experience of touring and dayhiking, taking in the
significant sights of Alaska from Anchorage to Seward to Fairbanks and beyond. Lodging
at the beginning and conclusion of the trip will be in hotels. While
on tour, participants will stay in primitive campgrounds, state and
federally managed, or in rustic cabins and will prepare most meals
there. Time is planned for dayhiking and wildlife viewing in each
diverse area. This is a superb package for the outdoor enthusiast!
Anchorage--Seward Area: Your trip begins in
Anchorage with a bayside journey to the beautiful seaport community
of Seward. The highpoint of this segment is an all-day, narrated
naturalist cruise in the waters of Kenai Fjords National Park. The
Fjords is refuge to thousands of colorful waterfowl, Stellar sea
lions, otters and orcas. No visit to Seward is complete without
seeing the Alaska SeaLife Center. We visit Alaska's most popular
glacier, Portage Glacier, and the new Alaska Native Heritage Center.
Denali Area: While traveling the Parks Highway between
Anchorage and Fairbanks, time will be spent in the historic community of
Talkeetna and Denali State Park in hopes of glimpsing a view of
Denali (Mt. McKinley), the highest peak in North America at 20,320-ft.
At Denali National Park, with its vast landscape and diversity of
big game animals, the group will make an all day journey to Wonder
Lake beneath the peak. This segment concludes with a raft trip down
the Nenana River and dinner at a true Alaska salmon bake. Lodging
here will be in rustic cabins just outside the park, our favorite stay since 1987!
Chena Hot Springs--Fairbanks Area: While camping in the Chena
State Recreation Area east of Fairbanks participants will see more
moose than anywhere during the experience and hike in boreal forests
and on Alaskan tundra. The road follows the majestic Chena River to
historic Chena Hot Springs where participants can relax in hot
mineral waters and dine out in a resort setting. The trip concludes
in Fairbanks with an exhibit of the historic Alaska Pipeline, a
visit to the University of Alaska Museum and the Large Animal
Research Station.
Registration: Early registration is essential to
confirm participation. Travel arrangements and costs to and from
Alaska are the responsibility of the participant. Our affiliate,
American Express World Travel of Knoxville, can assist each
registrant to assure the lowest fare and best connections.
